3GPP Rel-19: Maturing 5G-Advanced

2024-01-08
3GPP Release-19 is the second release of the 5G-Advanced standard. Early workshops on this release were held in June 2023 discussing hundreds of submissions. The original assumption was that 3GPP Rel-19 would primarily focus on investing in the 5G-Advanced commercial deployments to further improve performance and address critical needs. In this post, we’re elaborating on the contents of the selected WIs and SIs to be incorporated within 3GPP Rel-19 as of December 2023.

What is Open RAN?

2021-06-01
Like almost everything in Telecom's, Open RAN is complicated. It's not a single idea. It's not a single product or service. It's not an optimization technique or path towards improved efficiency. It’s hardly even an agreed term. Open RAN is essentially 2 foundational ideas: 1) The disaggregation of network functionality from the underlying hardware. 2) The specification of discrete functional blocks having well-defined interfaces. In other words, modularity.

5G Core Summit – Cloud, Fog, Private 5G and Initial Deployments

2020-12-01
We recently took part in the 5G Core Summit by Informa and Knect365, a virtual conference, which I'd like to shed some light on. The conference's main areas included: 5G use cases and ecosystem development, network cloudification, edge clouds, and network slicing, trials and lessons learned from initial deployments, specialized use cases, private networks and practical aspects of the first implementations, evolution strategies, and alike.

3GPP Rel-17: Way forward within 5G standardization

2020-11-16
As the first two releases covering the 5G system are completed (i.e. Release-15 and Rel-16), further features and enhancements are being covered within the ongoing 3GPP Rel-17. This post discusses a subset of the features from that release, including Non-Public Networks, higher frequency ranges, Unmanned Aerial Systems, Network Slicing enhancements and alike.
